The next stop on my road trip was the Pennsylvania Soldier and Sailors Museum in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The museum is located downtown, at the edge of Pitt University. Luckily for me, it was across the parking lot from out hotel, so an easy walk!
The museum is a single building that houses various artifacts from Pennsylvania’s contribution to the wars of the United States. One of the interesting things to me, was they had bronze plaques showing the ending roster of every Pennsylvania regiment that served during the American Civil War. Looking at some of the numbers, you can get an idea of the carnage suffered by men from that state during the conflict.
“The marble tiled floors of Soldiers & Sailors lead you on a pathway of discovery where you walk a timeline of themed displays ranging from the Civil War through our most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. View artifacts and learn about objects ranging from uniforms, medals, firearms, artwork and equipment. Our goal is to expose guests to artifacts that interpret the experiences of, and honor, American service personnel.“
One of the alcoves includes a metal room. In there, you see placards of each Pennsylvania metal winner in US history. The room also includes some of the metals.
The museum is basically a loop on a single floor, with a couple of alcoves. As the building is so large, it takes a little time to get through. In the center, there is the large auditorium, along with pictures of famous events that took place over the years.
The museum has a few dedications on the outside for remembrance of those that fought in America’s most famous wars. After our tour, we were famished and headed to another Pittsburgh location for a healthy sandwich meal!
