While reorganizing my unpainted terrain collection, I came across a couple very old packs of Architectural Heritage fallen tree miniatures. The company is sadly been gone for years, but you can find them recast and sold at many mini conventions.
Ironically, I totally forgot about these, as they had been misplaced with some old sci fi terrain at the bottom of the bag. Well, you never have enough through terrain (in my opinion)! I thought these would work really well on my 20 and 28mm historical game boards, so the time had come to remove a decade of dust and get to work.
The models were casted in a light tan resin. The are single poor models, so all the flash is at the baseline. There was definitely a lot of flash, but it was thin, so easy to remove. Since it is only on the bottom, you do not mess up the fantastic detail of the model itself. So, a little time with my Xacto followed by a broom and they were cleaned up.
As with most terrain, I wanted to keep it simple. I started with a Krylon brown camo paint base. I later added a black wash from Scenic Express to darken the models. Next I drybrused up some layers of browns. I hit the trees with a final highlight of light grey and then dryburshed up the ground areas with some layers of tan.
Once all the paint was applied, I went back and added some flocking blend to add some color to match my other trees. I followed with a Krylong spray paint to seal everything in and all done.
I like how they came out and the varying sizes of the sets. I need to be on the look out for a few more when the convention scene starts up later this year!
