If you have been following my pages, you know that I like to have a lot of scatter terrain on my game terrain boards. I think it adds that extra umph and makes the board more interesting when moving your figures. This is particularly true when skirmish gaming, which is the “thing” these days. It does not take much to add it and gives the needed cover.
While I was painting my last fort, I worked on the scatter terrain at the same time (while waiting for stuff to dry on the fort). The pieces are a combination of different company offerings and of differing materials. Some metal Woodland Scenics boxes, resin Old Glory bags and random resin pieces from other companies that I do not even remember!
All the models were sprayed Krylon camo tan as a base coat. Simply by applying GW contrast paints, Vallejo washes and Woodland scenics stains, you can get a completely different look from the same base coat. Just stain the model with the desired color and hit it with a dry brush or two and you are set. Paint a few details here and there. I used GW contrasts to stain the contents of the different jars, for example.
You can do this in between painting your figures, while waiting for paint to dry. This allows you to make the most of your painting time and you quickly build up your terrain!
