While picking up some paint at my FLGS, I saw the new Wiz Kids giant snake on the rack. Thought is was a nice looking figure and for only $4.99, figured it was worth picking up. The model comes in the normal plastic packaging and is made of Wiz Kids usual light grey semi soft resin. It is single piece, so no gluing necessary (except for attaching to a base of course! It’s good size and makes an intimidating piece. The detail is great, is easy to paint and grabs the paint well.
Part of my motivation for buying the snake was a desire to try out GWs turquoise contrast paint. I plan to use the color on a future army, so this would be a good test to see how it worked out. I sprayed the model with Krylon camo tan as a base. I then painted the entire model with the GW turquoise paint. I then drybrused some Vallejo turquoise over the body. I hit the underside with a wet brush of Vallejo bright green. This was followed up with a black wash in the mouth to darken it. I painted the tongue, eyes and teeth separately, using a couple shades. I finished of the rocks on the base with some grey, a wash and a couple highlights. I then sprayed the model with Krylon flat, for a snake like satin finish effect.
I’m pretty happy with how the model came out and with very little effort. I now feel much more confident using this technique in the future! I have found that it is not good enough to just paint some colors on a piece of paper to get a full effect. I prefer to paint an inexpensive figure, when I experiment. That way, I still have something useful when I am done and know if I will keep the same colors technique or try something different.
