Another old project that needed to be finished. I dabbled with some 20mm Spanish Civil War gaming a number of years ago, using Rapid Fire Rules (Romp in El Fuego variant). Generally, these games were played using other peoples figures. However, as I am want, I picked up some figures to start my own force. The hobby shop I was playing (now long closed) sold Irregular Miniatures figures. So, I picked up my first force, Guardia Civil. We had a shortage of Nationalists, but wanted to have an option to play either side, so I went with these guys.
I did a simple block painting job and mounted these on metal washers. While still not done, I none the less used the figures for gaming, until that phase burned out. I put them in a figure box with the intent of getting back to them at some point.
The time finally came for me to finish these guys. I found the box and looked over the figures. Now, I have to say that these particular castes are not very good by today’s standards. The details are not as crisp as I would like and the faces are quite bad. With that in mind, I just could not bring myself to spend a lot of time on these. However, I needed to get these to a better standard and finish them.
So, since everything was already painted, to me the simple solution was to go with washes. This is sufficient for 20mm figures most of the time, so that was my choice. I hit the uniforms with GW camo shade to get the uniform a little more green (the original green grey was too grey). I hit the flesh with GW sepia and then touched up the black here and there. Finally, I ballasted the bases, washed them with Woodland Scenics umber, followed by a dry brush of tan. I hit the age with medium brown and then applied Scenic Express flock/grass mix. A final Dull Coat and they are finally done and really ready for the tabletop. Just in time to try out the new version of Rapid Fire!
