Just because it was sitting on the shelf staring at me, I decided to work on an old bunker kit I bought for 20mm WWII wargaming. It was an AT bunker sold by Italeri for the old Operation WWII wargame rules.
This kit has more recently been re-released by Warlord for their 28mm Bold Action WWII rules (what is old is new again!). You can find it in both configurations on Ebay and in stores with older inventory!
The kit comes on two sprues and is injected molded in grey plastic. A few minutes and some glue and you can put the model together. As with most Italeri kits, it goes together well and has few flash or gapping problems. I assembled mine using Tamiya liquid model glue in about 30 minutes.
I considered ding it with a camo paint job (which was much more common), but opted to stay with the grey effect, as I think it looks better on the tabletop. With that in mind, I then sprayed the entire model with some Krylon light grey primer.
The next step was the wash, since I had the Vallejo black sitting on my tabletop, I used that to cover the model (never underestimate the power of laziness!).
Once the wash was dry, I decided to hit the whole thing with some Vallejo grey green to give a more concrete colored effect. I then hit various areas with GW camo shade and sepia washes to give some aging. This was followed up by a dry brush of Vallejo light grey.
I finished up by hitting the various medal areas with a shined down GW gunmetal. The whole kit was sprayed with Krylon flat finish (which is slightly satin) to seal the model and give a blended look. With that, the kit was finished and is now table top ready.
It is a nice kit that looks great when done. As it is lightweight, it helps with schlepping around for gaming. Being hollow, you can put whatever gun you want inside that fits your scenario (I used a Pak-40 for the pictures). If your looking for a new AT bunker, this one should be on your list!
