One of the nice things about running Pulp miniature games is that you can pretty much buy anything and fit it into a Pulp scenario. Getting into the Pulp has really expanded my collection of figures and terrain, while making my painting sessions a little more interesting. Well, the newest purchase was a few packs of the D&D spiders. I saw these on the shelf and decided they would be an easy project and could fit a number of Pulp scenarios. I toyed with the idea of using these for another miniature game (LoTR comes to mind), but decided not to do that (yet).
The figures come in the usual plastic packaging. There are three spiders and three bases. They also have a single web section for one of the bases (I have set those aside for now). They are single part models in the usual semi soft grey plastic. I did not find too much flash, so clean up did not take long at all. Just a few minutes of Xacto scraping.
I decided to go with black as a base color for these models, to give them a more sinister look. So, I sprayed them all with black paint. I then hit them with some grey drybrushing. Once the paint had set, I hit the figures with a semi-gloss spray coat from Testors, to seal them. All done, I was going to do bases, but decided to hold off on that. Their pocky legs do not have a lot of points of contact and I wanted to have some flexibly on how I used them.
With just a few minutes of work, they are ready for game play, or maybe a nice novelty to scare people with! If you are looking for spider minis on the cheap, these definitely are a good way to fill out an army. A LoTR spider army still seems like it might be fun….
