It’s that time of year again, time for annual Chantilly Gaming League Championship! The Chantilly Gaming Legion held their annual event at Huzzah Hobbies on October 12th. This event is a Ninth Age king of the hill gaming event. Each player brings a 4,500 point T9A army of their choice. There are three rounds played. In the first two rounds, the player plays the army their opponent brought, while playing their opponents army. The last game, each player uses their own army. Which ever player gets the most points by the end, is crowned CGL King of the Hill for a year!
This type of event gives players some interesting opportunities. First, it allows them to play with other armies. Doing this, actually helps players strengthen their knowledge of such armies for future game play, making them better tourney players. It also helps players with their own army, as they can better understand how their opponents see their army.
Maybe one of the more interesting things about this format, is that players do not want to bring optimized armies, less they give their opponents a leg up! So, you see all types of lists, that you would normally not see. This also has the advantage of helping players better know their own armies and not rely on the same structures. Helping them in the future to break out of the “standard list” meta that it is so easy to get stuck in.
In full disclosure, I did not play in the event. I am not really a tourney player. My preference is for group games over one on ones. Or maybe to quote James T. Kirk, “I don’t like to loose.” I’ll let you be the judge!
With that said, I stopped in to chat with friends and see the turn out. Not to mention, I never miss an opportunity to see a nicely painted wargames army!
The last round of the event was kicking off when I had to leave. It was clear that everyone was having a good time and grudges for next year were already being written down!
