Another Michael’s coupon, another Safari Games TOOB purchase! It seems my quest for cheap terrain for my Pulp gaming never is finished. I was killing some time, before a Dr’s appointment, so I thought I would take a stroll through a near by Micheals to kill some time. They always seem to have something on sale and even if they do not, there is the ubiquitous 40% one item purchase coupon!
My walk took me through the isle that they have all their Safari games toys displayed. Having picked up a few of these over the last few years and being very happy with them, I looked over the inventory. Looking specifically through the TOOBs (this is the Safari line that has multiple items in a single square tube (is that really a tube???). I decided to pick up a pack of their Dinosaur Skulls, as I think this will be very nice to have once I am ready to run my lost world themed Pulp games later in the year.
As with all the Safari items, they come pre-painted and ready to go. However, as with all the lower cost Safari items, there paint jobs can use a little help! However, when your only paying eight seven buck for the set, who can complain!
At first I was going to use the base colors and just work them up. However, I remembered that some of my previous attempts did not hold washes as well as I wanted (I usually dull coat the toys and them go from there). That being the case, I decided to spray paint everything with some Krylon camo tan spray paint (Krylon Camo paints are the boss). After that dried (OK, maybe two weeks after that dried….), I hit the toys with GW Brown Wash. I let that dry and then wet brushed all the pieces with some khaki, then drybrushed with some bone white and finally highlight drybrushed with straight white. Hit the everything with some Krylon dull coat (which dries more satin) and I was done. Super simple, super fast and super cheap! Now I have some skull terrain!
When looking for models and terrain, don’t forget to hit the toy isle. You can find some very nice pieces at very good prices. Just look past the paint jots and imagine what you can do with the piece. Your only limited by your imagination!
