It is 1924 when Jaque Suito emerges from the depths of the Belgian Congo. He is the sole survivor of an ill-fated mapping expedition in which his company died and from which their African porters fled. Suito returns carrying two rubies of extraordinary size, spinning a story too unspeakably terrifying to be believed. Lt John Smithby, the local constabulary has listened to Jaque’s unholy African odyssey story. From his prison cell awaiting the murder trial, Jaque recounts the mind-boggling horror that the mapping expedition encountered in the dark recesses of the Congo. Exactly how did the mapping expedition members die? What unearthly forces would drive men to commit such acts of immeasurable brutality? Could love have possibly bloomed in the heart of such darkness? Only another expedition can untangle the mysteries of the case!
We got together for a pick up game of In Her Majesty’s Name (our rules of choice) on our last “Pulp Wednesday”. It was somewhat of a last minute game, I did not have a lot of terrain with me. However, I did have my new Cigar Box battles temple ground cloth. I threw down some hills (under the cloth) jungle patches that my FLGS had plus a few shacks in my terrain box. Each player picked their team, so all we needed was a scenario. Having just finished my random Expedition Generator, it was time to put it to the test! For the clues, I made two the artifact and the other four were D6 natives (SV 1, FV 1 Pluck 6). We had four players, with two rolling Heroic (had to defend the shrine in the center of the table) and the others rolled Treasure Hunt (had to find the artifacts).
The game played out over eight turns, with all the traps being triggered, as the second artifact was not found until the last marker was flipped! The different missions went as hoped, with each player working the table. I’m happy with the outcome, as the game is not just all about killing the other players. The rolling for missions really speeds up starting a game, as players can just jump right into it and the GM does not have to spent time doing a full narrative mission (the mission writes itself!).
Check out the photos from the game!
