Not far outside of Vienna (just a thirty minute drive south), one so included can find the Schloss Forchtenstein. Well, south then up a big hill!. The castle was owned by the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire Esterhazy family. Today, the castle is a museum and what a museum it is. It provides some great viewing of uniforms, armor, weapons and paintings covering a key period of history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This museum is a real gem, as it is the largest private armory (of 16-18th century weapons) in the world. If you are interested in this period, this is a must see. I was somewhat recently in Austria doing battlefield tours and made sure this visit was on the schedule (it did not take much to convince any of us to go). We were amazed by the collection. Should you be in Vienna and have some time, take a short drive and you will not regret it. Here are a few pictures for your enjoyment!
