Some time ago, I picked up some TYW dragoons and pimped them up to fill out my TYW/ECW troop selection. I decided to experiment with a new basing model for the army to use the troops with either BBB or Epic Pike and Shot. In the meantime, I have looked over Valour and Fortitude and think they might be the sweet spot. We shall see. I was happy with the look and decided I would go ahead and redo the rest of my troops and get this project off the back burner.
Recently, I was able to order a copy of the Warlord epic Pike and Shot mini rule book, without paint and arm and leg for shipping. This motivated me to pull the models out and get to work.
I started by removing the models from their existing bases. This proved to be a bit slower than I thought, as I had to be careful not to mess up the bases or break the figures off at the ankles. I finished this up in a few evening.
Next, I pulled out a stack of 40mm x 40mm magnetic bases I ordered from Shogun some time back. I did some test fitting for the figure density I was looking for to represent the different troop types. I got the looks I was looking for, so pulled out the white glue and went to work.
I decided by heavy cavalry would be five models and my medium can/dragoons would be four figures (depending on quality). I then went with two figures for light cavalry. The artillery was just one gun per base (too tight for two guns). The infantry was eleven pikemen to give depth and bulk. The hand gunners would be eight, if they were formed up and four or five, if they were dismounted dragoons or lights.
A couple evenings and I finished the gluing. Next, I flaked each base with green paint and woodland scenics mixed flock. I then added a few dark green tufts to each base. I then went through and added static grass flock mix in random clumps using white glue.
I sealed everyone up with some spray matt varnish. I still need to figure out how to add flags that I can switch out, depending on what nationalities I need for a given game. I am leaning on just doing a whole bunch of paper flags and slipping them over the pikes as needed. I just need to figure out what I should apply to the wire when I am putting the flags together, so I can remove them from the white glue dries. Well, that is a project for another day! Then there is the 1683 Turkish army….
