While rebasing my Dwarf army for Warhammer the Old World, I was reminded a friend of mine had pointed out that I did not have any unit fillers for my army. This is something most of my earlier armies had. Since I was going through the whole project, I decided to go ahead and do a couple. I had an old flying base from Base X of War and an anvil 3d print that I bought to use as an Anvil of Doom (obviously, it was way too small). These were simple items that I thought would add character.
The flying base came molded on a 40mm side base, so I added a base expander to it and filled in the gap with some wood putty. The anvil was a two piece model that I painted up and just attached to a 50mm base. I pumiced them up to match my troops, with the required flock and flower tufts. With that, I have two squares to add some flavor to any blocks I field in the future.
This is a good way to add interest to your units. Another reason they can be helpful, is to add some bulk to units when you do not have quite enough figures. The key is just to do a two or four figure base (if the base gets too big, people will start calling you names…). For the purpose of the photos, I just surrounded it, but I would probably only use these on units of at least twenty figures.
