After struggling a bit to pimp my MC-200s, I thought I would try to work on a set of plains that would need minimal work. Laying on the top of the pile was a couple of early war US P-40s. I don’t have an army for these painted yet, but what the heck!
The models came in a simple green and grey scheme and had nice roundels, so I figured they would go like a snap. I stated with black lining all the flaps, rudders and elevators. I then wet brushed over the green with some Vallejo OD and then hit a drybrush with Russian Uniform. For the first time, I decided to try to do the same with the bottoms, as I had a matching gray and needed a little love. I then hit the glass with some contrast dark blue and some black on the guns, wheels, scoops and exhaust. All done with that part. Next I looked at the tail and saw it needed some color touch up. So, I hit the white areas white. I then hit the red areas red. I did the same with the red circles in the roundels. I thought that the planes needed a little more color, so I pointed the propeller hub red.
I was pretty happy, but then I realized that the stripes on the rudder did not match up.. Disaster! I pulled out the white and red again and did a little correcting, as best as I could. Had I noticed it at the beginning, I would have repainted them from all white. Oh well, I do not want to go back so I will just go with what I have. I will need to be more careful looking at match ups in future planes!
I finished up with a Satin spray paint sealer and then hand painted gloss on the glass. I now have some air support for my early war marines. Now I just need to finish the marines!
