I was thinking about adding a bit to my fantasy woodland terrain for playing The Old World. One of the things I was missing, was a nice looking impassible blocking terrain. All my existing stuff is more done around ruins and I wanted something a little more natural. Of course, I also did not want to pay too much!
I turned to Amazon and did a search through the aquarium terrain. This is a great place to look for terrain options for skirmish and fantasy. The terrain is durable and comes painted. Sometimes, it can use a little pimping, sometimes it is perfect out of the box. Even if it is not perfect, it is often good enough for the game table.
Well, while scrolling through, I found a large tree stump piece with some plants growing out of it. It was good sized and had a nice ancient forest look, at least to me. So, I ordered it and had it the next day.
It arrived and I looked over it. I knew I would replace the plants, as I did not like their look or style. It was brown with a lighter drybrush. Overall, not bad looking. It was cheap, so no challenges in working it up into something I had in mind.
As mentioned, I removed all the existing plants and extra glue. There was a bit of mold line clean up that I took care of with an Xacto. I then hit the whole thing with a dark brown wash to tie in the coloration a bit better. I followed with a few layers of brown and light brown drybrush, with a bit of light gray thrown in.
Next, I grabbed some flock and applied it in various spots and then added various grass and flower tufts to add some variation. I finished by adding some Vallejo standing water the inside to give a pool of water. I added a single tree to the back (it slides into the whole, so I did not glue it to each transport).
It came out the way I envisioned it and am happy. It is now ready for my next game!
