I recently did some work on some of my BTC road sets to lighten them up. I was happy with the result, so I decided I would take my wider roads and change them to winter roads for my snow terrain tables. These would be my wider roads and a number of thin ones for trails. I have been using these roads for many years and was always happy with them. However, I felt the color was always somewhat off. While setting up my winter tables, I used these to represent mud roads, but the look was a bit too stark. So, I figured I would solve the problem.
The roads are made of silicon and very flexible. So, any paint needs to have some flex to it also. I figured a muddy ice road with snow on it would work well to give a nice look on both a full snow board and a partial snow board.
I pulled out some white craft paint, as it is acrylic and flexible. It is important to only use acrylic. enamel based paints dry hard and will crack and may even cause warping.
I went through all the sections and wet and drybrushed all the sections. I hit the sides a little heavier. This gave white on top with brown in the ruts. This was probably good enough, but I wanted a little more. So, I added another step.
I found some acrylic gloss coat and hit all the sections with it. I then randomly sprinkled white snow ground cover from woodland scenics on the sections. I then hit the sections with another coat of gloss coat to seal it in.
I placed them back in the same packaging I got from BTC for now, as it keeps them flat. Now I have my winter roads and am ready for my next winter game.
