Battlefield Terrain Concepts released a set of latex roads a number of years ago. They started with a two inch road and then added smaller widths over time. Each set comes with a mix of straights, curves and crossroads. They also offer sets of single road types, so you can customize your collection.
When these came out, they were one of the few finished latex offerings on the market. They were molded in dark brown latex and painted up to a more medium brown. I was very excited about these and bought them when they were first released. They have gotten a lot of use in my gaming over the years.
I always liked them for their overall look, ease of use, storage and transport. The one thing I thought was a little off though, was the color. Well, in between putting decals on tanks, I needed a break and decided to just updated my various roads (I own all three widths). I pulled out the wide roads and half the thin roads that I used for 25mm gaming and laid them out.
I went through my paints and grabbed two shades of tan craft paint and a large make up brush. I found a TV series to watch while painting and went to work. I hit all the sections with the dark tan and then followed with a mid tan. After a few hours, all were done. Since they are latex, I will not spray these and just let the paint do its work. Spray sealer can cause warpage or cracking, so best to avoid it and stay with flexible acrylic paints.
So, what was old is new again! A little update and I have the roads I want. The road sets are still available online from Battlefield Terrain Concepts. They are still a great set out of the pack. However, if you want to pimp them up, just get some cheap craft paints and make up brushes and get to work!
