It was Pulp Tuesday and I was supposed to run a Pulp game, but I had a shortage of players, so I opted to can that idea for the evening. Most of the guys available had decided they wanted to play blood bowl. Not my jam, so I just grabbed my Wings of War stuff. That way I would have a fall back in case some other folks showed up. Well, that turned out to be a good choice, as an old gaming budding was visiting from out of town and a few others showed up to. Everyone was looking for an easy game, so I was ready!
I through out my Cigar Box Battles air mat and pulled out some planes. The mission would be two Rolands heading over British lines to spot a crossroads area for observation. So, I pulled out two Rolands and set them up. The allied players picked their own planes (one Camel and one Spade VII). The Rolands ran up the middle and managed to savage the allies, with a loss of one of their own. The mission was achieved and the sole German returned to base.
The allied players decided they wanted to try it again, but this time with different planes. So, the SPAD was out and the Neuport 28 was in! This time the Rolands came from the right side! Well, the game went about the same for the allies, but this time both Rolands made it home….
So, time to switch planes and try again! The Camel was out and the SE5a was in! This time, the Rolands came from the left corner. The Rolands worked themselves up the left and were able to concentrate on each allied plane again. With plenty of jams on both sides, but the allies were once again on the short end of the stick. One plane down and the other badly damaged, for only minor damage to one of the Rolands.
Three games in one evening and it was time for dinner. The Rolands (also known as the king of the sky) were able to stay together and support each other with their B guns, jinking at the right times to wrong foot the allied fighters. The allies attacked separately and suffered from concentrated fire in each game. The A guns could not compensate for the sheer number of B cards they were taking!
I nice distraction set of games that everyone had fun playing. The funniest thing was one of our players needed to get the Ronson award, as he managed to have his game start fire in all three games! Good times.
