While on travel, I had a chance to visit the Bavarian Military History Museum in Ingolstadt Germany. The bad news was that most of the museum was closed for renovation…. The good news is that the one area they had open, was the one I most wanted to see. The display on the Autro-Prussian War of 1866! Why you ask, well, this is my current painting passion and I have Bavarians to finish! Should you have the time and are around Ingolstadt, I would recommend a visit. The old town center is nice for a stroll and there are plenty of good restaurants (what can I say, I like German food). However, the museum is really a treat. There are actually a few museums (I’ll talk about the WWI in another post).
The 1866 display has a number of wall maps, fire arms from most of the war’s participants. There are a number of uniforms also, from different German states. The best part is being able to see the different shades of blue being used. This is something that never is correct in most books, particularly for the Bavarians. Well, here are a few shots, but look at those uniforms in particular!
