This years birthday present to myself was another FOW army. Because I clearly do not have enough…. Well, sometime ago while ordering some Gajo painted troops, I looked at the Gajo Hermann Goering sets. I have been looking at these for a while, as I think they are some of the nicer WWII offerings. Well, when I finally decided to stock up for the Italian campaign, I pulled the trigger and went big on a large order for these guys.

There are multiple sets to choose from and I ordered the different ones. The idea was to have enough troops to do two companies. Each would have MG, Mortars and some type of gun to support the infantry. The figures arrived and I was very happy with the look. I sat down and organized everything and realized that I missed counted and needed to order a few more figures to fill everything out. While I was awaiting the extra figures, I sprayed all the bases tan and started gluing the figures down. The rest of the figures arrived the last day of gluing, so I did those too.

I set the units aside, as I wanted to experiment with some smaller forces basing for the Med, before I did such a large force. I recently did that with some regular Heer troops and was happy with the look, so I got started with the HG force.

Like the other units, I started with Vallejo desert sand pumice. This was followed by a wash of GW sepia and then a drybrush of Vallejo Light Sand. I then hit the borders with some Vallejo Earth (still not sure if I am going to change this or not). I had to let the pumice and the wash dry overnight and there are a lot of bases, so this process took me a week of evening painting sessions.

Next is was time for flocking. I started with Scenic Express Summer blend flock. I then glued own a single tuft of three different colors of Gamers Grass tufts. I then used up the rest of the tufts to add random colors to the different bases to break up the uniformity, while still keeping the color pallet the same to tie everything together. This took me a few days to get finished up.

The last step was to add all the mortars, gun and HMGs to the bases. I also had to do a little touch up on some of the tan, as removing these from the sprues left a little silver. As far as painting, that was it, as I like the color choices for these troops. I finished up with some Mr Hobby Matt Finish.

With that, I have a nice Herman Goering or Luftwaffe field division force that will look good on your average Mediterranean table top or even summer in Central Europe. With these troops, I may have finally cornered the market on Gajo purchases (at lease until they get something new, or I decide I want something else….).
