Since I am on a tear to complete my CIS Legion army, next on the hit list was the “operative” Darth Maul (before the halving). I had picked up this figure quite early in my collecting, but never actually finished him. Well, the time finally came!
The Maul model is done in hard plastic, like all the newer Legion kits. It does not have many parts and is easy to remove from the sprue. You get three choices poses. I opted for the “power” pose and put hit together with one hand out using the force and the other holding his twin blade light saber behind him. Flash was very light, so he went together quickly using Tamiya plastic cement.
Next came the painting. Since he was mostly clad in black, I primed him “darkish” grey. My plan was to take this down, then build it up. Next, I hit all his uniform details with some GW contrast black. I thought it needed a little more darkening, so I followed with a Nuln Oil wash. Once that set, I then highlighted the raised areas with a Black Gray. I then hit the very tops and edges with some London Gray. This got most of the uniform details done. I did the same thing with the three viper droids that come with the kit. I hit the saber hilt and a couple of details with some silver and then a black wash.
Next was the red. I saber blades and face with a blood red to start. I then hit these with a brown wash. Next I highlighted up with two brighter shades of red. Next came the eyes. I stared with white slits and then did the iris in yellow and the pupils in black. A little black bordering around the eyes and then painting all the black skin areas with the same black. I hit the horns brown, followed by tan and a tip of white.
The next step was my usual basing of GW Agrarian Earth and Gamers Gras Spikey tufts. I do not like the flight stands, so I replaced these with wire and drilled a hole into each base to attach them. At this point, I dull coated the entire model with Tamiya Dull coat.
I let that dry over night and then hit the saber hilt, gloves and boots with gloss Nuln Oil to give some shine back and differentiate the materials. With that, Maul is ready to go!
