Time for the group to get together for our scheduled first weekend game. Chatting with everyone, we decided to try a game of Star Wars Legion. One of my buddies had just finished his Clone Army and wanted to give it a spin. Another buddy wanted to try out a Separatist list, which he put together. Another buddy brought his B1s and I filled out all the other Separatist figures.
I decided to go back to my ruin terrain and set up the board using that terrain. I had painted a number of more pieces for this setup that I had not used yet, so this would give me the chance. I especially wanted to see how my large ruin temple would work. I added a few trees to green up the table and finished with some scatter terrain and droids for character.
Both sides had exact 800 points, so we rolled off for red player. The Clone army was small and focussed. It started with Master Yoda and Master Obi Wan. They were supported by three units of clones and two Barc speeders. That was it, seven activations!
The separatists went with a smattering of troops to build around mass and support. They were lead by Kilani (we proxied a T series, I feel so dirty…), a T series droid, four units of B1, two units of B2s, two units of Droidikas and a spider droid. The droid troopers were all maxed out with heavy weapons and extra dudes. This gave them eleven activations.
The scenario was battle lines with a clear environment. The objective was objectives. The Republic had to destroy the objectives and the Separatists has to repair them. The Republic set up their objectives close together to concentrate their few forces. The Separatists did the same thing, to overwhelm the Clones.
Both sides set up their forces and we began the game. with both sides moving forward cautiously to get to the objectives on their respective sides. Due to the sheer number of CIS troops, they had to deploy wider, so their plan was to use a double envelopment against the clones. This was clear in the early moves.
The fighting started with early shooting and the Droids grinding forward. The early losses were even, which was not to the advantage of the closes. However, the losses were spread across the armies, so no units were eliminated. Just as the game looked like it was going to be a Droid sweep, the Clones managed to take out Kilani. This proved to be a turning point in the fight. With the loss of his command cards and boosts, things turned quickly. The clones fire because much more effective and they started removing one droid unit after another.
Obi Wan jumped into action first with an attack on a unit of B2. Unfortunately, these turned out to be tougher than expected. It took Obi the rest of the game to wipe out this unit. This key him protected fro fire, but also stopped him from effecting the game in a greater way.
Yoda jumped in on the next turn and showed Obi how it was done. He wiped out a unit of B1s and then another. His shied protected the clones around them and allowed them to weather the overwhelming fire from the droids closing in on all angles.
Some brake strafes from the Barca (one being finally taken out), did their damage too. At them end, this CIS had lost most of their troops, with their support vehicles coming out almost unscathed.
Neither side managed to win on objectives, so we went to points. The closes had lost a Barc and one unit of clones (two others were down to one figure). The CIS had lost two units of B1s, both B2s and Kilani. This gave the victory to the Republic! What a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
