I found a set of foam Micro Art Studio Power Towers at a Game Shop in the Richmond area, while visiting the city last year. I picked these up as some line of sight blocking terrain for my Star Wars Legion gaming.
I actually forgot all about these pieces and came across them while reorganizing some of my storage a few weeks ago! So, I pulled them out to work on.
The pieces are made of injectable foam. This makes them light weight and allows them to hold detail. The towers are a simple sci fi design and can be painted easily. I opted to spray the towers with some gray primer to get started. I decided I had a bit too much grey in my terrain box, so needed a little color! I am trying to get rid of my old GW contrast paints (I am converting to Vallejo), so picked a pot of blue and painted the towers with that. I figured that would add some color. After the contrast paint had dried, I wet brushed the towers with some electric blue and then a final light drybrush of light blue.
After looking at the towers, I thought they needed just a little something. I remembered that I had some extra bits of mine switches from the Legion objectives set that I painted when I did those models. I took out four of them and glued one to each tower to give each a control indicator. Nothing big, just something little to add character.
While I was waiting for the contrast paint to dry, I also painted up some resin silo bits that I had gotten from Acheson Creations some time ago. I thought these would work well with these pieces. I also had a resin print Gonk Droid on my table, so worked on this. They had already been primed grey when I did the towers, so it was just a question of dry brushing them up various shades of gray (using craft paints). I painted a few panels on the Gonk droid and added some color to the control panel up front. I based it using the same style as my other Legion figures.
Once everything was painted a dried, I hit them all with some Krylon dull coat to seal the paint jobs. With that, I now have some additional terrain for my Legion gaming. I love foam terrain and wish more companies made it. It is light (so easy to store and transport) and holds detail well. If I come across any of the other Micro Art sci fi terrain, I will definitely pick it up. Hopefully, they will bring it back into production!
