While repacking my SYW armies, I was reminded that I still have not done the guns for a number of my armies! I had painted the crews years ago, but just never got around to the guns. So, it was time to rectify that…
I had crew for Hessian, Buckenburg and Reichs that sat without guns. I had been cheating my using other guns to field the units, but of course the wrong colors… So, I pulled out the neglected gun models to paint them up. I have a whole box of assembled primed artillery pieces for various armies that I need to get to. I would show a picture, but I don’t think I could take the shame!
So, with the models for the sized and types I wanted, I got to work. I hit each with some GW contrast paint. White for the white guns and red for the red guns. I then drybrushed up each with the corresponding white and red to get my base color done.
Next, I needed to do all the metal work. For the Saxons, this was red. For Buckenburg and Richsarmmee this would be black. So, I did all that for each gun.
I then worked on all the gun barrels. These had been primed brown earlier, so the next steps was to paint them all brass. This covers much better over brown, which also gives a bit of a shade in some cases. Once this set, I hit the models with a dark brown wash, as I did not feel the detail was right for just a brass highlight. Once this dried, I hit all the barrels with a brass heavy drybrush. This goes fast, but you have to wait for each step to dry, so it is best to do this in-between working on other stuff. In my case, I was alternating between the carriages and the guns, not to waste time (and a little of terrain).
Some dull coat spray to give a semi gloss coating and I finally have proper artillery! Plus some unique schemes.
