One of the new Battlefront new releases for November was the re-release of the backyard terrain set. I did not get any of these when they first came out and regretted it. So, when they were re-released, I could not pass them up. I think you cannot go too far to add detail to towns and villages, as anything to break up the buildings sitting on grass set ups!
The set comes with four different pattern walled in back yards. These fit up against the standard BF WWII buildings seamlessly. I do not use those types of buildings myself (most of mine are Crescent Root). However, as these still flat and sit up against any flat surface, they will work fine with any building offering.
The set is made in the usual GF9 resin with a base black. Each backyard has a unique lookiwth different things inside to give a great variation. These are then drybrushed up. I often feel that GF9 models need more texture and pimp them up. However, I feel these are one of the exceptions. They have levels of variance and highlighting to work as they are. The only thing I thought they needed was some greenery.
I was surprised the set did not come with the usual little bags of flock, so you need to add your own. This is not an issue for me, as I have my own flock I use universally to match things up. I used some white glue and put down some simple Woodland Scenics green to add some back yard gardens. I then added some sections of Scenic Effects mixed flock to add some texture to represent wild grass.
I sealed these with some dull coat spray and they are ready to go. I now have them ready to go with my 15mm European village terrain. I would not mind having a second set, but I think these are a bit on the pricy side, so I will wait for a sale before getting more. With that said, it is a perfect set to add a little flair to your towns.
