I have been building up my supply of Sci Fi ruins terrain to support my Star Wars Legion painting habit. I still needed another piece to add to my Imperial Terrain sets to fill out my table. I remembered that I had an old pre-painted GW tower base that I bought for use as ruins in 8th edition.
The piece was made of foam and came in grey with static grass attached. I did not like the coronation of color of bright green grass that was used. It also had an extremely large scull in the middle (so GW) that was a bit over the top for my taste.
So, I decided to pull it out and re-do it to match my other ruins. I then remembered that I gave it to a buddy of mine some time ago, for a project that he was working on… Oh well, I was sure I could find another one online. Fortunately for me, my buddy never did anything with it and brought it back to me, as he went in another direction. Does that make me an Indian Giver?
Well, with the piece back in hand, I first tried to remove the static grass. As the model is foam, I could not use any type of stripper to remove it, so I tried the old water and brush technique. I then tried some mild cleaners with water. I managed to get a large portion of, but there was some residue remaining. I figured I could live with this. Next, I took out a knife and removed that god awful skull from the center. I then poured white glue in the area to seal it. I was going to finish with flock and tufts later, so I did not worry about how nice it looked.
The next step was to spray paint the model with gray primer. I tried to thicken it up a bit in a few spots to cover casting issues and mat down the remaining grass. Once that dried, I hit the model with a wash and then dry brushed it up three shades of gray and white using craft paint. I then added static grass and tufts that matched my other terrain. A coat of mat varnish on the model to seal everything in and add a little sheen. With that, I have another ruin for my table.
