I had a few things to finish up for an upcoming Legion game. The first were my AT-RT walkers. I had painted up a number of troopers, but had no support vehicles finished yet. I had started the walkers some time ago, so it was time to wrap them up.
The AT-RT walker is a hard plastic kit. The box also contains the usual tokens and cards required to play it on the table top. It comes with three weapon options (which are detachable, if you do not glue them) and two crew options. There are also two leg positions straight out of the box. It does not have too many pieces and goes together easily. Since I had three, I opted to mix and match the legs on the third, so all would have different stances for variation. I glued everything together in one evening.
I procrastinated in deciding how I would paint the vehicle (by hand vs airbrush). I decided to go the lazy route and went with the hand painted option. It would be a good test for further vehicles for the army. The decision was made easier by me bing able to find some decals on Etsy for the green panels. I ordered these of course! I started with a krypton light gray spray paint to prime and base coat the vehicle.
The next step was to hit all the models with a black wash from GW and let that dry. I wiped some of the excess from the front cowling. I missed a few spots in some of the recesses, so I went back and hit them again. That set and I went to the next step of a wet brush of light gray over the whole model, avoiding the recesses. I few spots got direct painting. I then hit the model with another lighter dry brush to pick up the edges.
I decided to hit the weapons and details with GW contrast black. This has really become a go to paint for me on Legion models, to give some quick shading. I painted all the weapons and and various details. I hit the seat with GW contrast brown. I then added lights and buttons to the cab using red, green, white and blue. The decal set included these details, but the surface was rough and the details a little to finicky for my taste, so I opted for using paint. It is only small dots here and there, so it went quickly. I then highlighted all the black using Vallejo London Grey.
At this point, I applied the decals I found on Etsy. They had to be cut out to the edges, so this was a bit finicky, but better than painting all these small panels I figured. A little water and Solveset and that was done while watching TV.
I then covered the dark brown sprayed base with GW cracked earth and let that dry. It was at this point that I realized that I had not painted the crew yet (I though I had done it earlier, but the painted figures were for my Arc Speeders, which need to be finished too). I had already sprayed them (light gray with a top spray of white). I used the same technique as my ground pounders. I hit the models with GW contrast white, followed by a heavy white drybrush. This is followed by GW contrast black on all the cloth and weapons. Follow this with a highlight of gray. Then direct painting of white on the panels, following the drybrush highlights and coving any black overpainting. I finished with adding my 212 yellow unit colors.
Once I finished that, the base had dried, so I drybrushed the cracked earth with some Iraqi Sand, hitting the walker feet with the same. A few tufts and spikey tufts, followed by spray Krylong mat varnish and I have my walkers ready for the table.
Like most of the Legion kits, these are very nice. They have great detail, no excessive amount of parts and go together very well with some plastic glue. Also like the other plastic kits, you get different options for weapons and poses. You can further mix and match to get even more variation. It is also a nice support option for the Clone forces in Legion. Now, I just need to finish some of the other Clone vehicles that I started!
