I have been looking for a desert fort to add to my Flames of War desert terrain for quite some time. This probably started back when Battlefront released their desert fort many years ago. However, I was not a fan of any of the 15mm forts on the market. I found that the walls were a bit too high and the foot print was way to large, as I would not want my fort to dominate the whole table. A while back, while going through the vendor hall at Historicon (back when we had conventions), I came across the Blue Moon 10mm desert fort sold by Old Glory Miniatures. The size looked perfect for what I was looking for.
I often look one scale down for terrain for my game boards. The reason being is that unless you are playing skirmish level games, the ground scale needs smaller footprints for buildings to look “right”. So, often, you can go one scale down and the building with look good with the figures. The key is to go for taller buildings to give some height. That was the case with with fort.
The fort is made of spray foam (one of my favorite materials). It has great detail and is very light. It comes with a number of metal parts, so you can add letters, stairs and ramparts. These attach easily with some super glue Which is what I did).
I hit the kit with some light tan spray paint that I had not he shelf. I then hit the entire model with Woodland Scenics Raw Umber. Once It dried, I hit the entire model with a wet brush of craft paint tan. I then painted all the wood with GW contrast dark brown. This was followed with a medium brown dry brush on the wood. I then dry brushed the entire model with draft paint light tan.
I went back and added some GW contrast black to some windows and ports and water troughs. I hit the dirt with some tan and then added some pigment to give a dusty look. I finished with a coat of Krylon matt finish to seal everything in.
With that, I have my fort. It is a nice kit that goes together easily and is easy to paint. Being foam, easy to store and light weight. If your looking for a small fort for 15mm, this might be the trick!
